9th December 2008

1. Energy Monitors were chosen by these classes:
3 Ruby, 4 Lilac, 3 Cherry, 4 Violet, 2 Olive, 6 Sapphire, 6 Turquoise, 1 Amber, 2 Jade, 1 Orange, 2 Emerald, 5 Magenta

The School Council are going to ask Sharief or Mr Zacharia to leave a note in those classrooms that leave their lights switched on or their computers and whiteboards on over night.

2. The council decided to work on the Water target next. In your classes talk about what we could do together to save water in school.

3. The next meeting is Tuesday 20th January 2009!

1. After talking with their classes the school councillors then reported back which of the issues their class found the most important:
5 Magenta - Saving energy
5 Cerise - Litter/ Rubbish
6 Turquoise - Plants around the school, healthy eating
6 Sapphire - Global awareness, energy
2 Emerald - Saving water
2 Jade - Waste paper
2 Olive - Waste paper
3 Cherry - Waste paper
3 Ruby - Rubbish / litter
1 Amber - Plants

Eco-Schools

Tuesday 11th November

1. Ideas from the classes:
4 Lilac:
- Turn off the lights when you're leaving the room.
- Have more stickers to remind people.
- Pick up litter and put peel in the compost bin.
- Recycle paper and plastic and reuse scrap paper.
- At home try not to use the computer and the tv at the same time.
- Use both sides of paper.
- Use paper sensibly.
- Use cereal boxes for art work.

3 Scarlet:
- Remember to use the blue recycling bins.
- Remember to switch off the computer when you are not using it.
- Try to use the wipe clean whiteboard as much as you can.
- Remind people to throw their fruit rubbish in the compost bin.

3 Cherry:
- Plant lots of plants.
- Use equiptment properly so it doesn't get broken.
- Look after people in the playground.

Year 6:
- Try to use healthier ketchup etc in the dinner hall.
- Try to walk to school as much as you can.

2 Olive:
- Don't add extra salt to the food in the dinner hall.
- In your homework books, don't miss out pages.
- have a compost bin for the dinner hall so food does not go on the floor.

2 Jade
- Put large signs for the recycle bins so that people know where they are.
- Instead of logging off, shut down, especially at the end of the day!

2 Emerald
- Use a rubber to get rid of mistakes don't throw the paper away!
- Don't waste water in the playground by letting the water fountains keep running.

5 Cerise:
-In your homework books, try to use the whole page.

3 Ruby:
- Collect recycling more often.
- Have a light monitor in the classroom to turn off the lights and computers in the class at the end of the day.
- Have a recycling bin for the library.

2. Eco Schools Checklist

Simple Environmental Review

This simple review is suitable for the Bronze award. To achieve Silver or Green Flag status, schools must complete a full environmental review, however, this audit could be carried out by pupils as a supplement to the full review.

Litter/Rubbish
1. Is there too much litter on the ground in the school grounds? No
2. Does the school have organised litter picking sessions? No
3. Are there enough bins inside and outside, in the school grounds? Yes

Energy
4. Are the lights left on in classrooms when people aren’t in them? Yes
5. Is it sometimes too hot in classrooms and the heating cannot be turned down? No
6. Are the computers in the ICT suite left on when not in use? Yes

Waste
7. Does the school recycle its paper from classrooms and offices? Yes
- We need to start collecting it again and Westminster need to collect it more often.
8. Does the school compost its waste fruit/vegetables/weeds etc? Yes
- We could do more than this.
9. Does the school try to buy goods made from recycled materials? No

Water
10. Are there push-stop water-saving taps in the toilets? Yes
11. Are there water-saving devices on the urinals in the toilets? Don't know
School Grounds
12. Does the school have a growing area? Yes
13. Are there enough places for pupils to sit at playtime? Yes

Biodiversity
14. Does the school have a wildlife area? Yes
- It needs some work to attract wildlife.
15. How else do you try to attract wildlife into the school grounds?

Transport
16. Is there a problem with cars outside school before school and at home time? Yes
17. Is it possible for most pupils to walk/cycle to school or take public transport? Yes

Healthy Living
18. Does the school have a fruit/healthy tuck shop at breaktimes? Yes
- Not as much in the juniors.
19. Are healthy options encouraged for school dinners? Yes
20. Is drinking water available in class? Yes

Global Perspectives
21. Do pupils consider how actions taken within the school affect people and the
environment locally and globally? No
- Some people are starting to do this but we need to get better at it.

1. We talked about EcoSchools and all the things we do in school that are good for the environment.

2. Talk to our classes about how to make our school environmentally friendly. Think about rubbish, waste, walking to school and saving energy.

3. School dinners. Talk to our classes about how to let the dinner ladies know what we like and what we do not like.

4. School Council meetings will every other Tuesday at 1pm in 5 Fuschia. The next meeting is on Tuesday 4th November.
